Taylor Wells

I lived my life achieving, and competing athletically. I was trained to do so by my family and our culture, and a part of my personality loved it because i could escape all of the painful feelings i had inside. i did a lot of stuff, got a lot of stuff, achieved a lot of stuff, and won a lot. but i wasn't happy. at age five i practiced figure skating several hours a day, and went on to compete, dreaming of the olympics. at age thirteen i lived and trained with nick bolletieri to turn pro in tennis, living away from my family for a year. in high school i played number one on my high school tennis team, won usta tennis tournaments, got straight a's and won homecoming queen. i went to an ivy league college, an ivy league graduate school for psychology, and did my clinical training at another ivy league school, seeing students who had disordered eating, as i had had for several years of my life. i had it all--the perfect life!! complete with the perfect husband (a homecoming king), lots of money and ivy league degrees, a big house and the perfect child. but i wasn't happy. my body hurt and my heart ached. i felt empty inside, like something was missing and/or something was wrong. then i found yoga. this practice healed and transformed me on so many levels--in ways that years of psychotherapy alone never could. i remembered who i was. and what was important. i healed my back. i slowed down and began to breathe and live and experience joy. i was present in the moment, and experienced each situation with integrity and grace. i stopped living in the future, and mourning the past. i practice yoga every day, and i live my yoga every day. it is a gift, and my dharma. i want to give this gift-the gift that changed and saved my life-to you.

A note on training: initially, i had nothing about my training and yoga study included in this bio because i believe that one's yoga comes from within. There will be people who guide you and show you how to practice and teach the physical asana that originated over five thousand years ago, but ultimately, your yoga is just that--your yoga. just as your life is just that--your life. you can choose to give credit to and/or blame others, but ultimately, it's all up to you. i have a tremendous amount of respect and gratitude for those with whom i have studied and trained, but as one of my teachers, bryan kest, said once: "i don't listen to yoga teachers or doctors...i hear them, but i listen to myself and my body." and undoubtedly, my biggest teachers have been, and continue to be, my three children--madison (10), sage (3) and phoenix (7 months).

Right around the age of 30, i had this moment of clarity: i had achieved everything i wanted to, everything i was supposed to, and it did not make me happy: ba, ma and phd from ivy league schools, a vice-president position at a private equity firm ... and it all left me feeling kind of empty inside, and stressed out, and impatient, and wanting to complain all the time. it did not feel great, and it did not seem right! yoga had been a small part of my life until then. it wasn't as glamorous as all the accolades and achievements i had been busy accumulating, but it felt good. i felt great, i felt refreshed, i felt grounded whenever i practiced. it was one of the few things in my life where more was clearly better!

so i continued my yoga, more and more ... and met my soul-mate ... a little more yoga ... and i was ready to get married. whenever yoga touched a part of my life ... that part of my life blossomed! that was it. i was ready, ready for the fast track to bliss. i let go of the things that were holding me back, and together with taylor opened prana power yoga.

it had taken a while, but i was ready. my daily yoga, my practice on and off the mat, it all shifted my spirit into high gear. it allowed my life to take off! and it works! i've seen it work, time and again: if you want true happiness, try yoga. it's a lot simpler than you think!

Lauren Hallal - Alexander Technique Teacher

The Alexander Technique aims to restore the use of the body to its natural and most efficient state by helping the student gain awareness of habits and by giving the student a different road map to follow instead of those unconscious habits.

The Alexander Technique teaches the pupil how to consciously think about and organize the internal relationship between the head and neck; and the relationship of the head and neck to the back, and the relationship of the whole self from the floor. Lessons are taught in a series of half hourly private sessions where the teacher uses verbal cues along with gentle hand manipulations in order to teach. Alexander lessons use procedures which take place in a chair, standing, on a table and in other positions.

The Alexander Technique is a practical and useful technique that can help with:

  • Improved performance in sports such as yoga, running, batting, pitching and golfing
  • Better, deeper conscious understanding of "alignment"
  • Better posture in poise and movement
  • Pain relief from chronic headaches, back pain and stress injuries
  • Improved performance in theater, dance, music and voice
  • Release from and tactics to deal with stage fright
